Washers according to DIN or ISO: When standard is more than standard
Washers or shims fulfill various functions: Compared to the screw head or nut, they increase the contact surface with which pressure is exerted on the component. This reduces the surface pressure and the risk of deformation, especially of soft or thin components, as the preload increases. Washers with a special surface or geometry also enable protection against the independent loosening of the screw connection. The sealing of screw connections, which is necessary in some cases, is also possible with appropriate washers.
